Perfect Ambition

The sunny rain drips wet light
Across the trees
Forming a rainbow spectrum
In the morning air.

A Cardinal sings for life.
Two gray squirrels sprint after each other,
Up the oak tree and around the grass
Their small lungs gasping

I throw open the window coated with
Resin from thousands of  dead cigarettes
My lungs fill with life.
My heart pumps its electric energy.

In the clarity of the light
I remember my dreams
As you lie sleeping
In the bed where we made love last night.

The painful aspirations of childhood
To great thoughts and great deeds
Disperse like dust in a pool
Of liquid satisfaction.

Why remember the striving for glory?
Why test will and strength against
The cosmic chaos?
What more do I want?

The coffee water boils over
And the roasted smell of freshly ground beans
Spreads in the air as I fill your cup
And place it next to mine on the wooden table..

I wake you
And we drink our coffee
Together
As the day begins.
